PCOA Checklist for Assisted Living
Pima Council on Aging has prepared a checklist to use in selecting residential care for older adults. Here are several of the items:
- What is the monthly base fee and what services does it cover? What additional services are there and do they cost extra? Is there an itemized list of services?
- Can they accommodate couples and are the fees specific to the individual care needs?
- What is the ratio of staff to residents, including on weekends and at night? Is there awake staff members available 24 hours per day? How are their skills evaluated and their credentials checked? How long has the staff been at the facility?
- Is the environment attractive, both indoors and outdoors?
The full checklist may be found here.

This is a significant accomplishment, pointing to the strict adherence to the standards of quality that have been established in the Villas.

Academy Villas “Vail Voice” News Article
Academy Villas Aging-in-Place
Academy Villas Aging-in-Place program is part of a larger program in Academy Village that provides residents in the Villas and Village with many options. This is described in an article appearing in The Vail Voice (Nov., 2016, p. 30). It describes progress on the new Academy Villas on Vivaldi, and Gary Fenstermacher, a resident of Academy Village and CEO of the Academy Services Corporation, wrote this piece. The article describes the evolution of the Aging-in-Place concept and the services available in the Academy Village. The Academy Villas are a large element in the aging-in-place Academy Village program. The Villas, the Wellness Center, and the Home Health program are available to residents of the Village. And the Villas residents consist of both Villagers, and those who come from outside the Village. For further information on the aging-in-place program, see here.
